Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry thawed
  • ½ lb thinly sliced deli ham
  • cups shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard optional
  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

Substitutions & Tips

  • Use crescent roll dough if puff pastry isn't available less flaky, but works.
  • Try cheddar mozzarella, or a cheese blend for a twist.
  • Swap ham with turkey prosciutto, or even roasted veggies for a vegetarian option.
  • Dijon can be replaced with honey mustard pesto, or skipped enti

Instructions

Prep Pastry:

  • Thaw puff pastry until pliable. On a floured surface, gently roll out each sheet to smooth seams and slightly enlarge.

Add Fillings:

  • Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard over the pastry. Lay ham slices evenly. Sprinkle with cheese.

Roll Tightly:

  • Roll each sheet from the long edge into a log. Wrap in plastic and chill for 20 minutes to firm up.

Slice and Arrange:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment. Slice each roll into ½-inch pinwheels and arrange on the sheet.

Brush and Bake:

  • Brush each pinwheel with egg wash. Bake for 18–22 minutes, until puffed and golden.

Cool Slightly & Serve:

  • Let cool for a few minutes before serving warm or at room temp.

Notes

  • Make Ahead: Assemble rolls and chill overnight, then slice and bake fresh.
  • Freezer-Friendly: Freeze unbaked pinwheels and bake straight from frozen, adding 2–3 minutes to bake time.
  • Flavor Boosts: Add sliced scallions, sun-dried tomatoes, or a pinch of black pepper before rolling.
  • For Extra Crispiness: Bake on a wire rack over the baking sheet to promote air circulation.
